Toothache: what to do

Tooth pain rarely goes away on its own. This page covers what your symptoms might mean and what to do while you wait for an appointment, it isn't a substitute for being seen.

What your symptoms might mean

  • Sharp pain when biting

Often a cracked tooth or a filling that has failed. Avoid chewing on that side and book a same-day exam.

  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

Pain that lasts more than a few seconds after the trigger is gone can point to nerve involvement, worth checking soon.

  • Constant, throbbing pain

Often a sign of infection or an abscess. This is the kind of pain that should get a same-day appointment, not wait.

  • Swelling in the face or gum

Can indicate a spreading infection. Call us directly, don't wait for the next routine slot.

While you wait for your appointment

  • Rinse with warm salt water to reduce irritation.
  • Over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging.
  • Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food and drink near the painful tooth.
  • Don't apply aspirin directly to the gum, it can burn the tissue.

Call us, same-day emergency slots are held every day.

If you can't reach us by phone, book online and mark it as urgent in the notes.
